According to Complete Sports, Sanusi stated that Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro has spoken with the Portuguese Football Federation.

Muhammad Sanusi, Secretary General of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), announced that the Super Eagles of Nigeria will face Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal in an international friendly in September. He stated that the game is being planned because of Nigerian coach Jose Peseiro's relationship with the Portuguese FA.

Nigeria was scheduled to play Guinea Bissau in a double AFCON qualifier in September. However, CAF has postponed the games until March 2023. The Super Eagles organizers waited for an official announcement about the September schedule change after CAF delayed the announcement.

With Nigeria super eagles match today and absence from the World Cup, the team needed to play top friendly games to prepare for future engagements.
